Product Description: Though this 1975 album cost Willie only $20,000 to record, it handed him the success he'd craved after years as a hit songwriter and modestly successful singer. By blending originals and vintage material, he created a timeless Western saga, one that originally left Columbia Records, who'd guaranteed him artistic control, skeptical. The label's doubts, amplified by the fact that Nelson had recorded the album in Texas with only his seven-piece touring band, evaporated after the album and two singles, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Remember Me," became huge hits and launched Willie into the stratosphere. This enhanced version preserves the original sequence, adding four bonus tracks. One, a brief snippet of Bach's "Minuet in G" from the 1986 Red Headed Stranger film, is inconsequential. Three more, from the 1975 sessions, are enjoyable covers of Hank Williams's "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You," Bob Wills's "A Maiden's Prayer," and Pee Wee King's "Bonaparte's Retreat," footnotes to the original but welcome nonetheless. --Rich Kienzle

5 stars TIMELESS AMERICAN MUSIC
sparse, haunting, and poignant-- Willie Nelson's THE RED HEADED STRANGER is all this and more...with the economy of a Chekov short story, Willie and his band tell a tale of sin, death, and redemption in the mystical and mythic West..."Hands on the Wheel" breaks my heart every time....

4 stars Vintage tale spinning Nelson
First, I find it odd to be invited to review the CD since I bought it for a friend and delivered it to the friend within two days of receipt. But there are some Nelson singles that are among the top music ever made, in my opinion, exemplified by "You were always on my mind". Probably others as well.

I listened through most of the album before driving down to the friend's town. The review title, vintage tale spinning Nelson, is my impression of this list of works. It is one of a few releases that truly focus on telling the stories, not so much exhibiting the musicianship. I like it.

5 stars Happy sister
My sister was ecstatic when she opened this. She had been trying to find it for a long time.

5 stars Americana & Willie Nelson

An excellent recording - clearly one of Willie's best, and one to recommend to people who have only heard the "commercial" Willie Nelson.

The playing is magnificent, which is Willie's trademark, and the small scale of the ensemble makes it a closer, more intimate experience. One should note that Willie can't claim credit for all the music: the tune to "Can I sleep in Your Arms" is really "Red River Valley" and "Hands on the Wheel" is "The Tennessee Waltz." Despite the familiar tunes, Willie still makes them work with the alternative lyrics, plus there's the fact you can sing duet with Willie with the original words, if you like.
