Customer Reviews

5 stars Great at what it does
I bought this for my Sony Discman. Open the box, plug it in, and it works like charm! Ya, I do need to switch to 4.5v as required. The adapter feels solid, the voltage switch got notches for each stop, great! It only takes 120V for input. So not an universal adapter. So international travelers beware!

4 stars good
I needed the product but found out that it would not power it. but it is something good to have just incase of an emergency.

5 stars Good Quality by a Reputable Manufacturer
Body of the unit has two slide switches and six DC plugs. One slide switch determines whether the tip or the ring on the plugs will be (+). The other slide switch selects the voltage (1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 or 12V). The unit is light enough that it holds to the mains outlet just by friction well and tends not to fall out. The DC line is about 5 ft. long. I have noticed that some other reviewers measured the open circuit output voltage (no load) and came up with high numbers that they thought could burn out their electronics. (I measure an open-circuit voltage of 16.6V on the 12V setting.) A very low-cost, but high-impedance load, (say, really inexpensive transistor radio) without any internal voltage regulation and with a low current draw (10 mA or less) could conceivably be damaged. This is not really a problem with the charger per se, but with the load characteristics.

Finally, although you might have trouble figuring out which polarity to use, it would be unusual for the ring to be (+) positive and the inner conductor (tip) to be negative. That is, the polarity switch would normally want to be in the UP position ( (+) on the tip not the ring of the connectors). Any equipment that had so-called positive-ground (unusual) design would probably also have reverse-current protection. That being said, if you have really high-value equipment, don't hook it up to a cheap charger like this for any reason, anyway, due to potential hidden manufacturing (not design) defects or internal damage. An example would be a $10,000 aircraft receiver with positive ground. There are such things.

3 stars Does exactly what it's supposed to do, just a tad ugly
This adaptor does exactly what it's intended to do, no more, no less. The design of the ends is a tad on the ugly side, with a couple having their own wire while the rest are attached to this little plastic "hub" sort of thing. Still, it's much easier than other kinds of adaptors that have removable ends that tend to get lost.

5 stars Phillips Universal Adapter
Excellent product. I currently use it for my son's travel dvd player, my norelco shaver, and my wife's keyboard. It is very easy to use and it is adaptable for many products.
