Product Description: Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz

4 stars Good, but get the box set or 'Meet Me In Margaritaville' instead
Jimmy Buffett is a legendary island rock performer. His unique voice and his backing band, The Coral Reefer Band made some of the best music of the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s, and he is still making great music even today.

Buffett has numerous compilations released, and this is, hands down, the best single disc collection on the market. All of the songs the really casual Parrothead will ever need are here. 'Margaritaville,' 'Cheeseburger In Paradise,' 'Come Monday' and 'Volcano' all appear on this 1985 set.

And, the sound quality is superb!

However, I can't recommend this for the average Parrothead. As a longtime Parrothead myself, I think there should be much more material here. For example, how come we don't have an album track like 'African Friend' here? That's one of the best songs from the 1978 'Son Of A Son Of A Sailor' record.

So I am warning you: If you are a true Parrothead, you'll definitely want more Buffett. My advice would be to get the box set 'Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads,' from 1992 or 2003's 'Meet Me In Margaritaville: The Ultimate Collection.' That's my advice.

But if you are a new Parrothead just looking for a cheap, nice entry point, than definitely check this out. Overall, this is highly recommended for the casual Parrothead.

Recommended for the casual Parrothead.

5 stars Love It...But I Have A Complaint
Bar none, this is a FINE offering from Mr. Buffett. My problem is, this is the ONLY album most people who claim to be fans of Jimmy Buffett even own. That in itself is a true shame. Buffett has had much better albums/compilations of his work, but SONGS was still the first to put them all together in a non-live package. One can't argue with the quality since these are all Buffett classics that stand the test of time. Pure summer fun.

5 stars Great CD For Parrotheads In Traning :P
This was the first Buffett CD at age 12, therefore it kinda reeled me into his music. This is a great CD with great songs that are still my favorite today. Every Parrothead has (or should have) this cd.
PHins Up!

3 stars Decent Sampler
Ok, I'm really sick of Margaritaville, Cheeseburger in Paradise and Fins. But the good news is those are really some of Buffett's lamest compositions. Before he became a favorite of people who know nothing about music, he actually wrote some pretty cool quasi-country tunes and more or less invented the idea of crossing Nashville with Key West. So, Son of a Son, Pirate Looks at 40 and some more make pretty great listening. He's got a lot of that stuff buried on his first few cd's, the ones that today's annoying 'parrotheads,' i.e., suburban Midwest drunks, have probably never heard. With all those riches, I don't know why Jimmy doesn't reissue this thing greatly expanded, with remastering, much needed, and at least double the amount of music on here. Buy this, but also check out the early Buffett and forget the self-parody that he became over the past 25 years.

5 stars Music For Florida-Jimmy Buffet
When i first herd the music on this cd i thought it was a little strange. Now i love the music on this CD. It seems to fit the trpoical theme down here in florida and in my opnion is a must have CD if you are going to be living somewhere nice and warm or tropical.
