Product Description: The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David Greenberger

5 stars Diamon In the Mine
Deb and Steve's story is a beautiful little slice of love and joy and, fortunate for us, they're both fantastic musicians and have that special gift of song to tell other people about it. What they've created here is deceptively difficult to do: they've expressed complex feelings with simple words and harmonies in ways that everyone can relate to. Compounding the miracle is that they've used a musical form that is over-saturated with drippy music trying to express itself. Somehow, their music is a diamond in that mine that is impossible to pass up. The fun and excitement with which they had making it positively radiates from the music. It's clear that they are completely at ease with each other and their musical sensibilities.

A thousand thanks to you both, Deb and Steve. This is great, great work.

3 stars Creative & full of Potential, but indecisive
Initially, I bought this CD because I really enjoyed the song "World Spins Madly On". Unfortunately, this album contains few songs as creative & beautifully melodious as that song. One of the major pitfalls of this album is that most of the songs are sung by Deb who really doesn't have as much vocal ability as Steve. On some songs her voice is simply amazing, on others it's annoyingly reminiscent of a poorly recorded song by a 70's era folksinger. Many of the tracks sung by Deb seem to be lacking some sort of magical quality, like she's holding something back from the audience. Other tracks, such as the brilliant "Not Your Year" would've sounded much better if Steve were singing.
Key tracks:
"The World Spins Madly On"- though this song is very slow & dark, it has a distinctive melody which is stunning in it's simplicity. 9/10 stars.
"Stars" sung by Deb, this song is a sweet, slow gem. One of the few songs where it actually feels as if Deb is expressing her true vocal ability. This song is also very full of passion. 10/10
"Love Doesn't Last Too Long" another slow song about falling out of love, sung by Steve.

4 stars Reminds me of Buckingham Nicks . . .

. . . though less flashy. Buckingham Nicks + Bonus is the album that led Mick Fleetwood to invite Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join Fleetwood Mac.

Any guitarist who wants to be truly versatile should listen to that album -- and this one.

A few portions of the vocals are a little too "sweet" for my tastes but there are many beautiful passages (harmonies, melodies and guitar) that nearly anyone can enjoy.

5 stars Nobody Know's Me at All
Deb Talen sings like a beautifully made instrument with a distinct pronunciation with an amazing twist in lyrical pitch. Take that and mix it with Steve Tannen's slightly earthier sound and you have an unbelievably beautiful mix of harmonies with great pop folk hooks that are so incredibly well crafted. The lyrics are super and the music is so good and worthy of repeating that it gives one plenty of opportunity to try to decipher them and take away what you will from them. If after listening to The Weepies "Say I Am You" and it doesn't calm the beast in you, then nothing will.

5 stars Fresh and superb
There is nothing that sounds like The Weepies. Alternative, acoustic, folk, indie; it's all in there. You will like it with the first listen, but not in the way you like a pop jingle that goes round and round in your head. This sound and words and the images provoked dive deep and keep running. Give yourself a treat and listen. And then listen again. And then again...
