Product Description: At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? (Note also that unlike some similar projects, all the parties involved on this CD were alive when it was recorded!) The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters-type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this pointon "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he's quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews
A great effort by a unique collection of musicians
The most important thing to remember is that this is a collaboration of musical artists that have rarely sung swing or standards and yet, all of them show us why they made it in music. Elton John, K.D. Lang, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Bono, and Elvis Costello all did a great job considering the style and tempo of the songs selected were not their usual "cup of tea."
The 1 song that didn't make me smile was the song "Smile." I don't believe Barbara Streisand understands the concept of a duet. I don't believe she's capable of complementing any singer. Most of the song featured Barbara going off into her usual disjointed self-absorbed "la la land." (If you think this is a good duet, you don't know anything about music)
Every other musical effort was what it should be, 2 artists making every effort to complement and enjoy the other artist.
The musicians behind the recordings are top notch. Stevie Wonder's duet that featured his song "For Once in My Life" is a fabulous duet, but Stevie Wonder's harmonica interlude in the middle of the song is even better.
Sting does a great duet, as does Celine Dion, Tim Mcgraw, and Diana Krall.
If you like Tony Bennett, you need this collection of songs. Of the 19 songs, 18 are duets, and at least 15 are somewhere between very good and excellent.

Duets: Tony Bennett CD
I was VERY disappointed ! These are all really old songs, and it was just boring, and the songs chosen were awful. I expected the guest musical artists to be doing "classic", and there are so many wonderful choices in that category. Why those songs? Who knows? I gave the album away.

Very nice
I liked it, not as much as the sinatra duets but Tony Bennett is one of kind like Frank and so good to see him well and still singing into his 80's!

Great choices... the songs and the partners...
I liked the pairings - the choice of the artists accompanying him, and the big band sound. I didn't care for the Dixie Chicks performance as much as the others, and it was the first track, but Bennett was great in it, and it got better after that. His voice is not quite as strong as it used to be, but still wonderful to listen to. The background music lacked something at times and this would have improved the album as a whole.
Most of the classic songs are uplifting fun to listen to. "Smile" with Streisand was wonderful, and I loved Put On a Happy Face - with James Taylor, it just makes one smile, you can't help it, it gets your feet tapping too :)
One thing disappointed me - his solo "I Left My Heart..." Tony's voice was good, but a bit more music than just the piano would have made it more enjoyable for this listener, it was a bit underwhelming. The last track with George Michael was a great finale, the last part of the song ends this CD powerfully, leaving one amazed yet again with his voice at 80 yrs of age. I like it a lot and recommend it.
