Product Description: Pat Metheny fans know by now what to expect from a recorded performance by the guitarist and his group, and it's all here on The Way Up - Live: superb, versatile musicianship, mixing virtuoso soloing with telepathic ensemble interplay and sustained moments of majestic passion and intensity; intricate rhythms and time signatures; sweeping textures punctuated by some memorable melodic passages; and, from a purely technical standpoint, superior sound and visuals. Yet The Way Up is a bit different, and a good deal more challenging. First heard on the group's 2005 CD of the same name (this performance was recorded in Seoul, South Korea), it's a long, ambitious piece of music consisting of four lengthy parts, all played without pause. For a live audience, it's more like taking in a classical music concert than a jazz or rock show; there are melodies and grooves, but no tunes, per se, as the piece mostly lacks the song-like appeal of much of the Metheny Group's best known work. Composed by Metheny and Lyle Mays, his longtime partner and keyboardist, the music constantly evolves over the course of its 70 minutes (Metheny himself changes guitars like Cher switches costumes), to the point where you might not actually recall much of it when it's over. But you'll certainly remember the experience of watching and listen to these seven brilliant musicians at work; and like the Seoul audience, you will be wowed. An interview with Metheny is the sole bonus feature. --Sam Graham

2 stars Overproduction ruins it for me
I have to say I'm really surprised that nobody else has complained about this but I felt the camera cuts were OBNOXIOUSLY frequent to the point that I honestly can't watch the dvd. It sounds ridiculous but I actually recorded the audio into my computer so I can just listen to the concert. The camera cuts to a different performer an average of once every bar through the entire concert and it is common as the intensity picks up for the camera to cut as frequently as every beat. We have to be talking thousands of cuts over the length of the performance. Do we need this? I think the average jazz fan has a longer attention span than most; why do producers always feel the need to "inject" excitement into live music dvd's when the good performers (like these guys) can do that themselves?

Speaking of the performance-as you would expect and as seemingly agreed upon by everyone else, the musicianship and performances are outstanding. Nothing left to be desired there. I really enjoy listening to the CD I made of it!

5 stars Metheny's Musical Magic!
Once again, Pat Metheny and his amazing bandmates prove that they are the greatest group of today and possibly, ever. If performances like this one are put in a time capsule or launched on the Voyager, future generations or other life-forms may think we had SOME good things about us. Buy this.

5 stars A great performance
If your looking a visual experience than unless your a musician your probably going to be disappointed. This is an audio experience. These guys play and that's all they do. But the playing is an experience. The This Way Up CD is a masterpiece and to see that it can be played live is a real treat. Sound wise I have to use Dolby Digtal 5.1 II since I have an older receiver (No HDMI) so I using the optical output from a PS3 and it sounds great. The 5.1 mix is also very good. Honestly I bought the DVD so I could get a 5.1 mix of This Way Up. But the live performance is an improvement over the CD.

5 stars THE WAY UP - THE ONLY WAY
A great DVD, from a great album, from a great musician, that I had the chance to see live, in Portugal. It's not easy to put in words what you feel when have the chance to see and ear the sounds that come out from Pat's guitars and imagination...those who like him like I do know what I'm talking about.
