Product Description: The Jewish Americans, a six-hour PBS documentary series, portrays the 350-year saga of Jewish immigrants who gradually wove themselves into the fabric of American life, forging a thoroughly American identity without abandoning cherished traditions that sometimes set them apart. It is a quintessentially American story, layered with the tension between identity and assimilation which other minority and immigrant groups will find surprisingly familiar.
Composer Michael Bacon's evocative score for The Jewish Americans is inspired by the rich tradition of Jewish religious and folk music. The main theme features Daniel Singer, Senior Cantor of the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue of New York, accompanied by cello, keyboards and vocalist Clare Muldaur Manchon. There are extended solo clarinet improvisations played by Lawrence Feldman, raucous klezmer-meets-New Orleans style jazz pieces, American folk textures mixed with Jewish inspired themes, and modern electronic soundscapes, all reflections of the Jewish experience in America.

Customer Reviews
Pure genius!!
I have never seen this documentary but just listening to the soundtrack I can close my eyes and picture every event...it's that good! The ethnic sound was right on the money while every emotion was played out well. In one song, "Catskills" I felt like I was travelling through the countryside, going on vacation and in another song I felt like I was poor and desolute, with almost no hope...the key word here is almost because you feel with each track, the fight, dispair, and rise of the Jewish Americn.

Intro to Jewish music
This CD was my introduction to the world of Jewish music. The music style is a blend of old ghetto klezmer - klezmer that became so great on the Lower East Side - and holy music.
Before I bought this CD, I watched the show on PBS, so I had some idea of what to expect from the soundtrack. If you cannot get ahold of the show, at least listen to the tracks "Boat from Brazil", "Lower East Side", and "Catskills" before buying; I found those tracks to be particularly representative of the CD as a whole.
I wholeheartedly recommend this CD to anyone with a liking for Jewish music, or just looking for something new.
