Product Description: The legendary progenitor of "cool jazz" in a historic live performance! The cool tones of one of jazz's iconoclastic figures ring out vibrantly on this set of deeply felt performances by Chet Baker, filmed at a Tokyo concert in 1985, three years before his tragic death. Crooning some of his signature tunes including "My Funny Valentine" and "Stella By Starlight," he delivers a fragile and memorable program.

Features Chet Baker on trumpet and vocals, Harold Danko on piano, Hein van de Geyn on bass, and John Engels on drums.

Customer Reviews

5 stars The best of Chet Bakers last few years.
Japanese television did the taping, airing it as a special. The complete concert is on the "Chet Baker in Tokyo" 2 CD set.
Of the best of Chet's years early and late (some of the in between was a few notes to buy drugs), this is my very favorite album. There are times he is as soft as a low flute, and other rifs that blaze for half or more of the head or bridge. On "Stella by Starlight" I had to transcribe the solo as it was so amazing to me, and such a different rif.
If you want the music, get the CD, but if you are really into the best of Chet, the DVD is a must too. Enjoy!

5 stars CHET BAKER IN TOKYO BUT NOT 1985
THIS IS NOT A 1985 CONCERT BUT THE JUNE 14 1987 CONCERT.IT LISTS 8 SONGS BUT THERE ARE 9 SONGS.THE 9TH IS 7 STEPS TO HEAVEN.THIS IS NOT THE COMPLETE CONCERT THAT WAS ON THE CD.THERE ARE 2 SONGS THAT ARE NOT ON THE CD,YOU`D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO & BEATRICE.THIS IS CHET AT HIS BEST.I SAW CHET MANY TIMES IN AND AROUND DETROIT,FROM THE ROUGE LOUNGE TO BAKER`S KEYBOARD, AND THIS IS WHAT HE SOUNDED LIKE AT HIS BEST.THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER ON VIDEO THAN CD.A MUST HAVE FOR ALL CHET BAKER FANS.FIVE BIG STARS.WALLYMC
