Product Description: Julia Sweeney says she was a "happy Catholic girl" when, one day, she walked into church and signed up for a Bible-study course. "What an eye opener that was!" she says. "Next thing you know, I was on a quest for something I could really believe in. I traveled to places like Bhutan, Ecuador, and my local Starbucks looking for answers. Would I embrace Buddhism? New Age pseudo-science? Was I a freak for feeling the way I did, or were there other people out there just like me? I was grappling with serious questions. But, somehow, a lot of the things that were happening to me seemed, well, funny." Equally comedic and insightful, Letting Go of God is Sweeney's brilliant one-woman show about her struggle with her faith. Grappling with the seeming contradictions in Adam and Eve, Noah, the Ten Commandments, and even the teachings of Jesus - and trying to understand the Bible's messages about morality, family values, and human suffering while faced with door-knocking Mormons and wise-cracking priests - Sweeney takes listeners on her very personal journey from God to "not-God". This performance was recorded on November 19, 2005, at the Ars Nova Theatre in New York City.

Customer Reviews

5 stars What this cd is about:
Julia Sweeney will keep you very well entertained while she tells you a story about how she started questioning her religious beliefs and finally decided to let go of god. She will explain very simple, and at the same time very compelling arguments, that she had to come up with to confront her previous beliefs. Julia Sweeney is a good story teller so the cd will not only make you think, it will also make you laugh.
The cd comes with a booklet that contains the transcript of the whole story.
I think this cd is as essential as any good reference book that would keep you keep in your library.

5 stars clever work
Julia Sweeney's CD and book are both amusing and thought provoking. Although the subject matter is serious, she presents it in an amusing style that keeps you laughing and involved,
I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to anyone who is open to ideas that go beyond indoctrination,

5 stars Entertaining and thought-provoking story
Julia is obviously a very intelligent, compassionate person and is easily relatable. Her delivery is funny and sincere, and listening to her share the story of her personal quest for spiritual understanding is super entertaining, particularly for anyone who has ever questioned the faith they were raised in. I am not atheist but I wish more of my religious friends & family would listen to this.

5 stars Why the Bible Was Only Allowed in Latin and Greek
At some point in every thinking Catholic's life (I know because I was raised as one) he/she decides to actually READ the Bible to learn first hand what he/she is supposed to believe in. As Ms. Sweeney points out, this is often the beginning of the end of the Catholic's hold on faith. Catholics are usually brought up with all kinds of beautiful medieval rituals but very little understanding of the book that gets taken out on Sundays only by the priest and is only read in bits and pieces. Reading the entire Bible and actually doing some Bible study shows Ms. Sweeney (and most Christians, if they were open minded enough to admit it) just how incompatible with logic and reason Christianity truly is, not to mention cruel for condemning the majority of innocent people (yes, if you having killed or raped someone, you are an innocent person. Original sin is nonsense) to be tortured for eternity. She then explores the world of Deepak Chopra, New Age fluffy beliefs, Buddhism (karma really bites!), and then finally accepts that she must base her world view on science and what can be proven. I very much enjoyed this cd, mainly because my own faith journey has taken a very similar course as Julia's. You don't have to be a former Catholic to enjoy this, but it does make it so much funnier because you feel as if Julia had been in Sister Marie Isabelle's class with you, getting slapped with the ruler for asking simple questions (that's really what happened to me, in the 1980's no less). Buy this cd and explore with Julia, then pass it on. This is the one to get before Dawkins and Hitchens as it is sweet and gentle and still respectful to those who habour the last bits of faith.

5 stars Serious Humor
Julia does a wonderful job of dealing with one of the ultimate questions of life. She is very serious yet she enriches that with wonderful humor and amazing wisdom. She has such a quick wit! I've shared these with family and friends and gotten rave reviews from them. Warning: these CD may forever change your life outlook for the better!
