What the heck?
The most helpful review on Amazon right now praises that this "remastered" edition of Billy Joel's Greatest Hits sounds better than the original. I have no idea what that person was listening to, but it sure wasn't the same set of CDs that I got.

I compared this new release to the original CD release, and the original blew it completely away. Not only is the audio quality muddier in general, but there's an obnoxious emphasis on the bass line and bass drum. I don't remember where, but in one review I saw researching this edition, it said something along the lines of "Now the bass SOUNDS like it should." No, it doesn't. It's just louder. This CD, like most "remasters" I've bought, is also dynamically compressed. So it's REALLY annoying when the bass drum has a lot more emphasis, but doesn't make any impact on you.

In fact, now that I think about it: Most of the "remasters" I've bought just sound louder, and have an obnoxious emphasis on the bass line/drum while dynamically compressed. The only ones which I've bought that actually improve sound quality are ones for recordings made before 1970. Still though, they suffer the bass/dynamic compression treatment just like this "remaster".

Bottom line: get the original CD release. Not only does it sound as good as MFSL CDs (I have a few, and the original CD release sounds just as good as them), but it will most likely be cheaper too.

Super Collection of his songs
Bily Joel has always been a great music maker. This CD is a great collection of those songs. I enjoy this CD very much.

One of a Kind Talent
One of the best of our time, just a great library of music and one heck of a good man. So many songs and his writing, words and music tell so many stories and in this collection has it all and can listen to it often from cover to cover. Another unique talent that we have yet to see anyone upcoming of similar talent.

a great Billy Joel retrospective........
This dual CD set contains some of the most well-known (and well-loved) Billy Joel hits from his heyday (during the 1970s and 1980s). Though, he still continues on today, many of the tunes featured here really defined his career during that time. They include his signature song, the soulful and bittersweet "Piano Man," "New York State of Mind," "Just The Way You Are," and the infectious "Only the Good Die Young." And that's just disc one. Disc two includes "My Life" (for me, this will always be remembered as the theme song to "Bosom Buddies") and "She's Got a Way." Whenever I hear this music it really settles my nerves, makes me feel good to be alive and gives me a perspective on the curve balls that life throws at me. I think you'll feel the same. This definitely should be a part of your CD collection.......
