An Enjoyable 80's Snapshot
After the commercial disappointment of 1982's Grammy winning CHAKA KHAN (which featured her r&b top 5 remake of Michael Jackson's "Got To Be There"), Chaka came roaring back into gold and platinum album status with this mid-80's outing.
All the 80's production techniques are here: Scratches, loud snare drum machine sounds, buzzing synth patterns, and other special blips and bleeps associated with this decade. In the center of this "production" is the powerful voice of Chaka Khan, one of the few singers who can rise above any "everything including the kitchen sink" production techniques.
Lots of popular 80's acts make contributions to this album. Of course, there's the famous title track written by 80's icon Prince featuring performances by the legendary Stevie Wonder and rap pioneer Grandmaster Melle Mel. Pioneer electronic soul duo The System (whose biggest hit was 1987's "Don't Disturb This Groove") contributes "This Is My Night", while Arthur Baker lends his remixing skills to a wacky remake of Gary Wrights "My Love Is Alive". The synths and drum machines eventually become softer on a cover of Carole Bayer Sager's lone top 40 hit "Stronger Than Before" and the slow jam classic (and future Kanye West sample) "Through The Fire".
Overall, some parts of I FEEL FOR YOU are very dated, but it provides a good portriat of what was going on musically in the 1980s.
