Product Description: There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.

Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz

Customer Reviews

2 stars too much left off
Agree with both the other reviews, but "Desert Skies" is the missing song that changed my mind. I will not be buying this either.

5 stars Marhsall Tucker
An awesome collection and fine representation of Marshall Tucker. Those who have gone before us are still missed.

5 stars A must for fans of Southern Rock
In the 70's Southern Rock really begin to take shape. Living here in Nashville Charlie Daniels Band was the big thing with the Volunteer Jam. When Marshall Tucker Band came out with the first album with tracks like "Take The Highway" and "Can't You See" everyone I knew took notice and the rest is history and this double album covers it all just fine.

From the start thru the middle and up to now you get a complete musical journey of MTB. You get all their hits along with all the good stuff that didn't get the same airplay but still solid. Right off the bat on the first disc you're hit with "Take The Highway", "Can't You See", "24 Hours At A time" and "Fire On The Mountain". If there's one small "con" it would be lack of Live songs which was the trademark of MTB. Especially "24 Hours At A Time" with Charlie Daniels on fiddle. A extra bonus is the small booklet that's the cd cover as well. It has a history lessson on MTB from start to now. You get a insight behind the songs to who everyone is and lineup changes thru the years. Really good reading. A great collection of songs from a bunch of close friends out of a small South Carolina town.

4 stars Here's an idea
Anthologies and Hits collections are made for people who don't have all the classic albums by the artist in question. I for one don't care for This Old Cowboy and don't mind its exclusion from this set. But if I did love that song I would probably already own the album/cd it originally appeared on and wouldn't care if it was left off a new compilation. Do fans really think they should have any say in what goes on a compilation? Its a 30 year anthology, not a best of the 70s.

5 stars Outstanding CD. Outstanding service
You can't go wrong with the old Marshall Tucker Band. But preferences aside, I received my order in good time and condition, which is what counts.
