Product Description: Motown just keeps packaging and repackaging those classic '60s hits. But whether you're looking for a souvenir of Lawrence Kasdan's movie or just another Motown sampler, you could do a lot worse than the Big Chill soundtrack --which also throws in a dab of Three Dog Night ("Joy to the World") and Aretha Franklin ("(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman") and even Procul Harum ("Whiter Shade of Pale"). Many of the choices are pretty obvious--Marvin Gaye's "Heard it Through the Grapevine," Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "My Girl"... but they are great songs. And a few aren't quite so overexposed, like the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" or the CD bonus track of the Marvelettes' "Too Many Fish in the Sea." Nothing chilly about these tracks. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews

5 stars vietnam era memory
Good movie - songs are from the Viet Nam era and the movie depicts the aftermath of college students of that era. I am one of them.

4 stars You Can't Always Get What You Want
This is the first of two soundtrack CDs issued for the movie "The Big Chill" (the other being The Big Chill: More Songs From The Original Soundtrack) and it contains the more prominent of the songs used in the film including:
"I Heard it Through the Grapevine" - this is the song played during the opening titles.
"Joy to the World" - this is the song played during the credits.
"Ain't Too Proud to Beg" - the song playing when the yuppies dance around the kitchen.
All of the songs from the film that are missing from this CD can be found on the other CD, mentioned above, with the exception of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - the Rolling Stones song played at the funeral. This song is sorely missed from these soundtrack albums and its omission is apparently due to the fact that the Rolling Stones do not allow their songs to be included on albums other than their own. For people trying to obtain this song, it can be found on a number of Rolling Stones CDs including Let It Bleed [DSD]. Even without this song, however, this is still a great CD containing some of the best songs of the Big Chill era.

5 stars Amazing Soundtrack
I grew up listening to this soundtrack! I love it!! I even found a copy of it in my parent's basement in vinyl!!

4 stars Old School
I reminded my friends as they listened to this in my car: Old School RULES. All of these songs have staying power, and all my friends end up jammin' to oldies when I play it.

2 stars Unfulfilled promise
The mixing on some tracks is awful, and at one point, vocals are lost altogether on The Rascals track. I love this music -- the soundtrack of my college days -- so having it on one disc for traveling (I commute 50 miles round trip every day) is great, but the quality could be lots better.
