Product Description: Even taking into account inflation, it's ironic in this era of $250 concert tickets that critics harped when the Band charged $25 for their legendary November 1976 farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland. That price not only included Thanksgiving dinner, but also numerous guest superstars who'd influenced, worked with, and/or shared the Canadian roots of Robbie Robertson and crew. What transpired was a grand celebration of North American musical forms. There are numerous definitive performances here--from Van Morrison's goose-bump-inducing "Caravan" and solo rendition of the beautiful Irish standard "Tura Lura Lural" (Celtic music inspired those Appalachians in the first place) to Bob Dylan and "the Hawks" delivering a pop-metallic "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down," first captured on the Royal Albert Hall Concert tapes. But because this new fleshed-out version--produced and compiled by Robertson--includes surprises (late blues legend Muddy Waters's endearing take on Louis Jordan's "Caledonia"; current blues legend Dylan's "Hazel"), treasures ("This Wheels on Fire," Neil Young's "Four Strong Winds"), and two jam sessions that just don't add much, the new box set simply matches and enhances--but doesn't top--the original three-LP version of this wonderful slice of rock & roll history. --Bill Holdship

simply outstanding
A great rendition of a historic concert, "The Last Waltz" boxset is a perfect addition to the movie DVD, and a real must-have to all Band fans. That's a piece of Rock history right there, don't miss it.

Fabulous music!
The Band's "The Last Waltz" concert still sounds as fresh and innovative now as it did when it was first released ~30 years ago. It's amazing that none of the music has gone out of date. I like having all of the extra tracks that weren't released previously. Many of the best musicians of that era performed at the concert.

When music was music
If I could create my heaven, I would ask to be onstage listening to the Last Waltz for eternity. This concert puts today's music to shame--no 100 dancers, no sex shows, no makeup & backflips, no studio effects, no bodyguards just jammin'. Musicians as real people and confident artists with ability using their instruments (watch American Idol after watching this film and you'll feel embarassed for the truly amateur talent). No wonder today's music scene, overly produced and commercialized, is going to the toilet.
While the music is first rate, nothing compares to the film and watching these musicians perform. Danko playing his guitar so effortlessly, Robertson smoking every song, and Levon Helms yodeling is a sight to see. My favorites, Cripple Creek, Joni Mitchell's Coyote, Muddy Waters Mannish, Dr. John Such a Night, and the incomparable Van Morrison singing Caravan.
Levon Helms complained that this film featured too much Robbie Robertson & if it does (though I don't think so) that's scorsese and Hollywood, always gravitating toward the pretty face and the graceful profile to sell the picture. The only members who get short shrift are perhaps Manuel behind the piano and Hudson, totally introspective anyway and looking like the mad professor. can you see what a music label would do with these guys today? Make them sing with britney.
and sorry robbie--neil diamond didn't belong there.

Fabulous
Amazing music, stellar lineup of musicians and great recording. The only thing better (that you can buy) is the movie.

Your Band collection is not complete without The Last Waltz
I had the album way back when vinyl was the best option for quality. I also love the extra tracks.
